What is the best time to visit Xinjiang?

June to October. Mid-June to early July for the Hucheng lavender and Zhaosu rapeseed double bloom, July-August for peak grasslands, mid-September to early October for golden Kanas autumn. November-April for ice-snow and hot springs.

When is Kanas at its best?

Mid-September to early October for golden birch and morning mist over the Three Bays; June-August for green summer and turquoise water; winter for quiet snow scenes.

When is the Ili grassland best?

Mid-June to early July for flowers and fullest grasslands; August stays green; September is quieter and cheaper.

How many days for a first Xinjiang trip?

7-10 days for the North Xinjiang grand loop; 5 days for a short Sayram + Nalati route; 13-15 days for a full North-plus-South loop.

North Xinjiang or South Xinjiang?

North for nature (Kanas, Ili, Sayram) — first-timers, families, photographers, June-September. South for culture (Kashgar, Pamir) — history and road trips, year-round.

Will I get altitude sickness on the Pamir?

Viewpoints are 3,000-4,200 m. High-altitude tours include an onboard doctor, oxygen and first-aid, with gradual ascent to reduce risk.

Do I need a visa or border permit?

No visa for standard routes. Border areas (Baihaba, Tashkurgan, Khunjerab) need a permit — we arrange it for ~CNY 60 with 5 working days' notice.

Is Xinjiang safe for tourists?

Yes, safe and tourism-mature. Respect customs, ask before photographing locals, carry your ID for checkpoints.

What is the time difference?

Xinjiang uses Beijing time but life runs ~2 hours later; summer sunset is after 22:00, so sightseeing shifts to evening light.

How far apart are the sights?

Vast — Urumqi to Sayram ~560 km, to Kanas ~700 km. Most routes average 3-5 hours of driving with overnight stops.

Is insurance included?

Yes — CNY 800,000 agency liability + CNY 300,000 personal accident per person; altitude routes add medical evacuation.

Is it truly a no-shopping trip?

Is Sayram Lake worth visiting?

Yes — a 2,071 m alpine lake, the last tear of the Atlantic, with a 90 km loop, deep-blue water and snow reflections, paired with Guozigou Bridge and lavender.

When is the Dushanzi Highway open?

About June to October, closed in winter. Self-drive or charter; leave the mountain road to experienced local drivers.
